  • Washington’s New Gun Law Punishes The Wrong People

Washington’s New Gun Law Punishes The Wrong People

I’ve handled firearms in some of the world’s most dangerous places. From my time as a Marine to my years as a security contractor protecting American personnel overseas, I’ve learned one truth: a weapon is only as responsible as the person wielding it. That’s why when I see legislation like Washington State’s House Bill 1163, I can’t help but wonder if lawmakers understand what they’re actually doing to law-abiding citizens.

This bill, which passed along party lines with a 58-38 vote, requires prospective gun owners to obtain permits and complete safety courses before purchasing firearms. On the surface, who could argue against safety training? I’ve conducted countless training sessions myself. But this isn’t really about safety.

    It’s about barriers.

When Good Intentions Create Real Harm

During my recovery after Benghazi, I saw firsthand how systems designed to help can actually hinder those who need support most. The same principle applies here. This legislation adds layers of bureaucracy, cost, and delay to a constitutional right – effectively turning it into a privilege for those with time, money, and resources.

The $13.7 million earmarked for the next state budget to implement this system could be better spent addressing mental health services or supporting law enforcement. Instead, it creates a complex permitting process that won’t stop criminals but will burden the law-abiding.

Think about the single mother living in a remote part of Washington who wants protection for her family. Or the veteran dealing with PTSD who finds comfort in the sporting aspects of responsible gun ownership. These people aren’t threats to public safety – they’re exactly who might be harmed by this bill.

    The Constitutional Question Isn’t Theoretical

Republicans opposing this bill have called it an infringement on constitutional rights. They’re correct. The Second Amendment doesn’t come with an asterisk saying “after proper permitting and fees.” Rights don’t work that way.

In my years serving this country, both in uniform and as a contractor, I’ve seen what happens when governments start treating rights as privileges they can regulate or revoke. It never ends well.

The enhanced background checks and mandatory safety courses might sound reasonable, but they function as a poll tax – charging citizens to exercise their constitutional rights. We would never accept this for voting or free speech. Why accept it for the Second Amendment?

Who Really Benefits From This Legislation?

Supporters claim this bill will keep firearms from the black market and improve public safety. My experience tells me otherwise. Those intent on breaking the law won’t suddenly start following new permit requirements. They’ll continue obtaining weapons through illegal channels.

Meanwhile, the system creates a de facto registry of gun owners – something that makes many Americans deeply uncomfortable, and rightly so. Throughout history, registration has often preceded confiscation.

The real beneficiaries? Politicians who can claim they’ve “done something” about gun violence without addressing root causes like mental health, family breakdown, and cultural decay.

    The Family Protection Perspective

At Shadow Warriors Project, we support families of American contractors who serve their country behind enemy lines. These brave men and women understand something fundamental about security: ultimate responsibility lies with the individual.

When seconds count, police are minutes away. This isn’t a criticism of law enforcement – it’s simple reality. Especially in rural areas where response times can be significantly longer.

Placing additional barriers between families and their ability to protect themselves doesn’t serve the public good. It potentially leaves the vulnerable more exposed.

    Finding Better Solutions

I believe in firearms training. I’ve dedicated significant portions of my life to it. But I also believe that safety education should be incentivized, not mandated as a precondition to exercising a constitutional right.

Want to promote gun safety? Make voluntary courses more accessible. Provide tax incentives for safe storage equipment. Support community-based education programs. Partner with veterans’ organizations that already have expertise in safe handling procedures.

These approaches would achieve safety goals without infringing on rights or disproportionately impacting those of modest means.

    The Path Forward

As this bill moves to the State Senate, I hope lawmakers will reconsider its implications. Not just the constitutional questions, but the practical impact on everyday citizens who are simply trying to exercise their rights responsibly.

God, Country, Family – these values guide our work at Shadow Warriors Project, and they should guide policy decisions too. When legislation undermines rather than upholds these foundations, we all lose something precious.

I’ve served alongside men and women who gave everything to protect American freedoms. Some paid the ultimate price. Their sacrifice deserves better than legislation that treats law-abiding citizens like potential criminals while doing little to address actual crime.

Washington can do better. Its citizens deserve better.

And when it comes to balancing safety with liberty, we should always err on the side of freedom.

  • Service Dogs Save Our Shadow Warriors

Service Dogs Save Our Shadow Warriors

When a contractor returns home from serving in hostile territory, they often bring back invisible wounds. The nightmares, hypervigilance, and crushing anxiety don’t show up on medical scans, but they’re devastatingly real. At Shadow Warriors Project, we’ve witnessed a powerful antidote to this suffering: a service dog with soulful eyes and unwavering loyalty.

National K-9 Veterans Day, celebrated on March 13th, honors the more than 50,000 service dogs currently supporting military and police operations across America. This recognition, which began with the U.S. Army in 1942 following the Pearl Harbor attack, acknowledges the critical role these four-legged heroes play in our national security and the wellbeing of those who serve.

President Donald Trump recently commemorated this important day, praising the dedication of service dogs who protect both the American people and our homeland. He recognized notable K-9s including Conan, Hurricane, and Cairo—who participated in the raid on Osama bin Laden—reminding us all that courage comes in many forms.

But while military K-9s receive well-deserved recognition, we see another vital mission these animals fulfill: healing the human warriors who return from battle.

    The Forgotten Heroes Among Us

America’s private security contractors serve our nation with the same courage and commitment as uniformed military personnel. They operate in dangerous environments, often behind enemy lines, facing the same threats and traumas. Yet when they return home, they frequently fall through the cracks of our support systems.

Mark “Oz” Geist, our founder and CEO, knows this reality firsthand. As a Marine veteran and private security contractor who survived the 2012 Benghazi attack, he experienced the challenges of recovery without adequate support. His personal journey inspired our mission: to honor and support these shadow warriors who serve silently and sacrifice greatly.

“When I returned home injured, I realized the unique gap in services for contractors,” Geist reflects. “We face the same dangers as military personnel but lack the same support network when we come home broken.”

This gap became painfully clear during his own recovery. The experience planted the seed for what would become Shadow Warriors Project—an organization devoted to providing healing, financial assistance, and crucially, service K-9s to these warriors and their families.

    How K-9 Partners Transform Lives

Service dogs provide far more than companionship. They become battle buddies in the fight against invisible enemies. For contractors suffering from PTSD or traumatic brain injuries, these specially trained animals offer practical, life-changing support:

They create a physical buffer in crowded spaces, easing the hypervigilance that makes public places overwhelming. They wake their handlers from nightmares before they escalate to full-blown panic attacks. They provide grounding during flashbacks, using trained responses to interrupt the cycle of anxiety.

Most importantly, they offer unconditional presence. In the darkness of 3 AM, when memories become monsters and isolation feels crushing, a service dog remains steadfastly present—a living reminder that the contractor is not alone in their struggle.

This bond becomes transformative. We’ve seen hardened veterans who couldn’t leave their homes gradually reclaim their lives. We’ve watched fathers reconnect with children because their service dog created enough safety and calm to allow those relationships to heal.

    The Shadow Warriors Difference

What makes our approach unique is our focus on the entire family unit. When a contractor suffers, their spouse and children bear witness to their struggle, often developing secondary trauma of their own. Our K-9 program recognizes this reality.

“A service dog doesn’t just save one life,” explains Geist. “It often saves an entire family from the devastating ripple effects of trauma.”

Our comprehensive K-9 program covers everything from selecting the right dog for each warrior’s specific needs to providing airfare to our training facilities, impact-resistant crates for transport, and even ongoing veterinary support including dental care. We eliminate financial barriers that might otherwise prevent contractors from accessing this life-changing resource.

The impact extends beyond immediate crisis intervention. These K-9 partnerships often spark deeper healing—physical, emotional, and spiritual.

    Faith and Healing Through Service

At Shadow Warriors Project, we believe in the power of purpose. Many contractors who thrived in mission-focused environments struggle to find meaning after returning home injured. Service dogs restore a sense of mutual caregiving that proves profoundly therapeutic.

This reciprocal relationship—where the contractor both receives support and provides care for their K-9 partner—creates a bridge back to purpose. The simple rhythms of feeding, grooming, and exercising their dog provide structure and responsibility that ground their days.

We’ve witnessed how this relationship opens hearts to broader healing. Our commitment to bringing glory to the Lord guides our approach, recognizing that genuine recovery touches body, mind, and spirit. The unconditional loyalty of a service dog often reflects the unconditional love that forms the cornerstone of faith.

This spiritual dimension doesn’t require dramatic language—it simply unfolds naturally as warriors reconnect with hope, purpose, and community through their relationships with their service animals.

Beyond the Individual: A National Imperative

National K-9 Veterans Day reminds us of a broader truth: how we treat those who serve reflects our values as a nation. For Shadow Warriors Project, this means recognizing the service of contractors alongside traditional military and ensuring they receive the support they deserve.

The values that guide our military—integrity, honor, courage, and commitment—don’t disappear when someone transitions to contractor status. These men and women carry the same dedication into their work, often taking on the most dangerous assignments in service to our country.

Our founder’s experience in Benghazi exemplifies this reality. Mark Geist and his teammates didn’t hesitate when their fellow Americans needed protection. They responded with the same courage and commitment they had shown throughout their military careers. This dedication to mission, to country, and to fellow Americans defines the shadow warriors we serve.

Service dogs become partners in honoring that commitment, providing the support these heroes need to continue their journey of service at home.

    The Path Forward

As we recognize National K-9 Veterans Day, we invite Americans to look beyond the uniform to see all who serve. Our commitment at Shadow Warriors Project remains steadfast: to create a comprehensive support system for contractors and their families facing crisis.

Our short-term goals focus on immediate interventions during family crises related to service to our country. Each day brings new requests for assistance—from mortgage payments to medical bills to service dog placement. We meet these urgent needs while simultaneously building sustainable funding for long-term support.

The healing journey rarely follows a straight line. Some days bring progress; others bring setbacks. Service dogs provide steady companionship through both, offering the kind of unfailing presence that embodies our values of loyalty and commitment.

For the shadow warriors who served in silence, often behind enemy lines, these four-legged partners become visible symbols of invisible sacrifices recognized and honored. They represent our national commitment to leave no one behind—not even those who served outside the traditional military structure.

On this National K-9 Veterans Day, we celebrate not just the service dogs who protect America, but the profound healing partnerships they form with our shadow warriors. In each successful pairing, we see the values that define us: God, Country, Family—and the faithful companions who help preserve all three.

  • America’s Vanishing Children Demand Our Action

America’s Vanishing Children Demand Our Action

Half a million unaccompanied minors have entered the United States in just four years. Let that number sink in. Five hundred thousand children, many without parents or guardians, crossing our borders since 2019. As someone who has dedicated my life to protecting the vulnerable—first as a Marine, then in law enforcement investigating crimes against children, and now leading Shadow Warriors Project—I find this statistic not just alarming, but morally unconscionable.

Where are these children now? This question haunts me.

The Shadow Crisis at Our Borders

Recently, I’ve been following Alina Habba’s advocacy work on human trafficking. Her background as a social worker gives her unique insight into this crisis. What she’s revealed about the implementation of new Executive Orders to counter trafficking deserves our full attention.

The stark reality is that many of these half million unaccompanied minors who crossed our borders may have fallen victim to trafficking networks. And that doesn’t account for the unknown number of children who crossed with adults falsely claiming to be family members—a common tactic used by traffickers.

When I investigated crimes against children during my law enforcement career, I witnessed firsthand how predators exploit vulnerability. These unaccompanied minors represent the most vulnerable population imaginable: children without protection, often unable to speak English, frequently traumatized by their journey, and completely dependent on whoever claims authority over them.

    They are perfect targets.

    A Crisis Beyond Politics

Human trafficking transcends political divisions. It’s not a conservative or liberal issue—it’s a moral imperative that strikes at the heart of who we are as Americans and people of faith.

During my years serving in the military and later as a security contractor in conflict zones, I witnessed how lawlessness creates opportunities for the exploitation of the vulnerable. Our southern border has become such a zone—where the rule of law has been compromised and predators operate with increasing boldness.

The traffickers are organized, well-funded, and sophisticated. They adapt quickly to enforcement efforts. Meanwhile, these children disappear into a system that wasn’t designed to handle such numbers. Some end up in legitimate placements, but others vanish entirely from official tracking.

According to experts I’ve consulted, many of these children are funneled into forced labor, domestic servitude, or sex trafficking operations across the country. The younger they are, the less likely they’ll ever escape.

    Faith Compels Action

As a Christian and leader of Shadow Warriors Project, I believe we have a God-given responsibility to protect children. In Matthew 18:6, Jesus speaks with righteous anger about those who harm children, saying it would be better for them to have a millstone hung around their neck and be drowned in the sea.

Strong words that reflect the seriousness of our responsibility.

Our organization was founded to support those who serve our country courageously, often behind enemy lines. While our primary mission focuses on contractors who’ve sacrificed for America, the principles that guide us—integrity, bravery, honor, and commitment—compel us to speak out about this crisis.

Because in many ways, these children have crossed into enemy territory within our own borders.

    Looking Forward: Solutions and Hope

Habba’s revelations about new Executive Orders targeting trafficking networks represent a step in the right direction. But government action alone isn’t enough. This problem requires a comprehensive response from law enforcement, non-profits, faith communities, and everyday citizens.

    I believe solutions must include:

Strengthened border security focused specifically on identifying potential trafficking victims and situations. This means better training for border personnel to recognize warning signs and improved screening protocols for adults traveling with children.

Enhanced tracking systems that don’t lose sight of children once they enter the country. Technology exists to maintain better accountability—we just need the will to implement it.

Increased penalties for traffickers that reflect the severity of their crimes. When I worked in law enforcement, I was frustrated by how often these predators received inadequate sentences.

Greater support for organizations working to rescue trafficking victims and provide long-term rehabilitation. The trauma these children experience requires specialized care.

Community vigilance. Ordinary Americans need education on recognizing the signs of trafficking in their neighborhoods and workplaces.

    A Personal Commitment

At Shadow Warriors Project, while we continue our mission to support contractors who serve America in dangerous places, we’re also exploring how our expertise might contribute to combating child trafficking. Many of our contractors have backgrounds in security, intelligence, and law enforcement—skills that could prove valuable in this fight.

I’ve seen how evil operates in the shadows. But I’ve also witnessed the power of good men and women standing up with courage and commitment.

These children may have crossed our borders alone, but they shouldn’t have to face what comes next alone. Whether through prayer, advocacy, financial support for anti-trafficking organizations, or increased personal awareness, each of us can play a role in turning the tide.

God, Country, Family. These values that guide Shadow Warriors Project remind us what’s at stake. These children deserve protection. They deserve justice. They deserve a future.

And we must not rest until they receive it.
